Local Expert in Leland, MI: Your Guide to the Area

Leland, Michigan, is a picturesque town has the best of both worlds–a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural history, making it one of Northern Michigan’s most captivating destinations. Whether you’re visiting for a short stay or looking to put down roots, Leland is full of experiences that make it a truly special place. Here’s your guide to what makes Leland unique.

A Town Steeped in History and Culture

Leland, MI, is known for its historical significance and quaint charm. Founded in the 19th century, Leland has evolved from a fishing community into a vibrant center for art, culture, and recreation.

The heart of this history can be seen in Fishtown, a preserved historic district that features weathered shanties, docks, and fishing tugs that date back over a century. Today, many of these old structures house unique shops, local restaurants, and even charter fishing companies, keeping the town’s maritime legacy alive.

You can explore Fishtown to get a sense of what life was like in Leland’s early days, all while enjoying modern conveniences and a welcoming atmosphere. The Leland Historical Society’s museum is a must-visit for history buffs, offering a deep dive into the town’s rich heritage. It’s a place where past and present blend seamlessly, making it easy to understand why this small town has captured the hearts of many.

Embrace the Outdoors: Endless Activities Await

Surrounded by natural beauty, Leland offers access to some of the most stunning landscapes in Michigan. With Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Leelanau on the other, the town provides an incredible array of outdoor activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Boating, kayaking, and fishing are popular pastimes, and there’s no better place to set sail than from the Leland Harbor, where the boats bob gently against the backdrop of the waterfront.

Leland is also just a stone's throw from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, one of the area’s biggest attractions. Here, towering sand dunes provide breathtaking views over Lake Michigan, while miles of hiking trails lead through lush forests and along stunning coastlines.

Winter in Leland transforms the area into a wonderland of snow-covered forests and frozen lakes. Activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular among residents and visitors, offering a new way to explore the landscape. For those who enjoy ice fishing, Lake Leelanau provides the perfect opportunity to reel in a catch while surrounded by the serene beauty of a Michigan winter.

With a climate that’s perfect for growing grapes, the region is home to a number of award-winning wineries, each offering tastings and tours that highlight the area’s distinctive flavors.

A short drive from Leland, you’ll find tasting rooms nestled among rolling vineyards, where local wines like Pinot Noir and Riesling are celebrated.

Local restaurants also make the most of the area’s bounty, offering menus that feature fresh-caught fish, seasonal produce, and regional specialties. From casual cafes in downtown Leland to fine dining experiences just outside of town, there’s no shortage of delicious options.

Visitors can spend a leisurely afternoon enjoying lunch on a patio overlooking the water or savoring fresh-smoked fish from Carlson’s, a beloved Fishtown market that’s been serving the community for generations.

About the Author

I was raised in Cincinnati.  My dad was a professor at U.C. and so we were fortunate to have the entire summer to spend on North Lake Leelanau. Summers in Leelanau were such a gift. Starting at the age of twelve we were able to drive the boat into town or to the yacht club. My days were jam-packed. I would teach sailing school at the Leland Yacht Club in the mornings, then take a nap on the dock or the beach, shower, then drive into Leland where I had a job as a hostess. My sisters and I did this every summer and when we had a driver's license we had more options for employment.  I stashed away thousands of dollars every summer (literally in a shoe box). Yes, we worked our tails off, but it really did not seem like it since we were enjoying all the beauty of Leelanau at the same time.

I graduated from Miami of Ohio and after graduation I bought the Riverside Inn with my mother and my sister. I later sold my shares when I realized that being a single parent did not pair well with working late nights. After that I was fortunate enough to spend about a decade as a full time parent and I cherish every moment of those years with my (now adult) kiddos, Mackenzie and Sean.

I Earned My Real Estate License in 2016

By that point, I had bought and sold houses seven times over the course of twelve years. I had to be a real estate expert by then, right? The simple truth is I love real estate! What I love most about real estate is establishing great relationships. Each new client is a wonderful surprise. We live in such a small community, yet I get to meet new people all the time and usually, they turn out to be great friends. The other thing I love is the variety. Every house is different, every client is different, and it all comes with its own unique challenges.

As our team expanded, I knew we needed to rebrand.  I wanted our new name to symbolize how vibrant and yet comforting it is to live and vacation in the county. Leelanau Living is not just about who lives in Leelanau and how they live here -  it is also about all that is living in Leelanau including all of our natural resources.
