Get To Know Alissa

Hi there, I am Alissa! Before I share how I joined the Leelanau Living Team, I would like to tell you about who I am and how I ended up in Leelanau County. I am not originally from the area, I was a seasonal resident and moved here full time. I have spent the majority of my life in Leelanau County exploring the small towns and the natural beauty the county has to offer. I grew up exploring Sleeping Bear Dunes and the lake shore of Lake Michigan looking for Petoskey stones, days on the beach, and chasing sunsets.

My husband and I started a property maintenance company about a month and a half before our wedding. After our announcement, Robin Vilter reached out to us asking if we were interested in helping take care of her clients rental properties. We partnered with Robin and her husband, Neil, in assisting with maintaining their clients rental properties. On our honeymoon, my husband, Scotty and I were talking about our future and the next steps of our business. He suggested that I should ask Robin about her real estate team. I have always had my eyes on the local market such as the trends and desires of what buyers are looking for in a property.

Shortly after we returned from our honeymoon - we went to Alaska by the way and I highly recommend that everyone should travel there at least once in their life - I reached out to Robin asking her about the local market and asked if she was growing her team anytime soon. She quickly replied to my text and said she was looking to add a person. We met, discussed the opportunity and it was a no brainer. I joined The Leelanau Living Team through Five Star Real Estate.

What I love about Leelanau County and Grand Traverse County is how you can have the amenities of a city, and within a short drive you are out in the woods or on the beach of Lake Michigan. There are endless opportunities for activities whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or enjoy dining downtown, you can have the best of both worlds. My favorite part of Leelanau County is the various little towns and how different they all are. Glen Arbor, Leland, Suttons Bay, Northport, Empire, Cedar, and Maple City all have their own atmosphere and have something different to offer. From any point of the county, you are within a 40 minute or less drive to downtown Traverse City. Traverse City has numerous restaurants that offer various different cuisines. From fine dining to sitting at a local bar, it is nearly impossible to find a bad meal or drink in our area. After eating, you can stroll down Front Street and you will find stores that cater to all.

I do have to say, it is hard for me to choose which town is my favorite throughout the area. I really love Fishtown in Leland and Glen Arbor. I also really love downtown Traverse City with all of the restaurants. I could talk about the three  towns all day but that is for another blog post. I can’t give everything away in my first post.

I grew up summering here and became a full time resident. I had the privilege of experiencing both sides of Northern Michigan. I remember when it would be busy from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year and the area would quiet down until the following summer. With the exposure thanks to social media, this area has grown and is keeping us busy all year.

As your real estate agent, it is my goal to find the right Northern Michigan home for you. Whether you are looking to purchase your new forever home or investment property, I will be there for you for each step of the way. My job is to make sure all of your questions are answered, look out for your best interest, and find the right home for you and your family.

With my experience, I have an understanding of what it’s like to move to the area and which town is suitable based on your wants and needs. If you are looking to move to a new town in Northern Michigan or purchase an investment property, I will help you find the right home. I also specialize in luxury homes in Leelanau County.

Feel free to reach out to me anytime just to say hi,  if you have any questions about the area, or to discuss home options throughout Northern Michigan. I am always a phone call or text away. I can’t wait to meet you!

-Alissa

About the Author

I was raised in Cincinnati.  My dad was a professor at U.C. and so we were fortunate to have the entire summer to spend on North Lake Leelanau. Summers in Leelanau were such a gift. Starting at the age of twelve we were able to drive the boat into town or to the yacht club. My days were jam-packed. I would teach sailing school at the Leland Yacht Club in the mornings, then take a nap on the dock or the beach, shower, then drive into Leland where I had a job as a hostess. My sisters and I did this every summer and when we had a driver's license we had more options for employment.  I stashed away thousands of dollars every summer (literally in a shoe box). Yes, we worked our tails off, but it really did not seem like it since we were enjoying all the beauty of Leelanau at the same time.

I graduated from Miami of Ohio and after graduation I bought the Riverside Inn with my mother and my sister. I later sold my shares when I realized that being a single parent did not pair well with working late nights. After that I was fortunate enough to spend about a decade as a full time parent and I cherish every moment of those years with my (now adult) kiddos, Mackenzie and Sean.

I Earned My Real Estate License in 2016

By that point, I had bought and sold houses seven times over the course of twelve years. I had to be a real estate expert by then, right? The simple truth is I love real estate! What I love most about real estate is establishing great relationships. Each new client is a wonderful surprise. We live in such a small community, yet I get to meet new people all the time and usually, they turn out to be great friends. The other thing I love is the variety. Every house is different, every client is different, and it all comes with its own unique challenges.

As our team expanded, I knew we needed to rebrand.  I wanted our new name to symbolize how vibrant and yet comforting it is to live and vacation in the county. Leelanau Living is not just about who lives in Leelanau and how they live here -  it is also about all that is living in Leelanau including all of our natural resources.
